The 2010-11 Mayor of Salisbury is Councillor Brian Dalton. Councillor Dalton is the Saliisbury City Councillor for Harnham and is believed to be the 750th Mayor of the city of Salisbury.
Born in January 1967, Brian is the youngest of five children. He has three brothers, but sadly his sister died aged just 34, in 1990. His late parents Peggy and Jack were married in St. Martin’s Church in 1946 and lived in various parts of the city before settling in Wiltshire Road, where Brian still resides today.
Having lived in West Harnham all his life, Brian attended both local Harnham schools, then Highbury secondary school in Laverstock.
After leaving school in 1983, Brian embarked on a four year apprenticeship at Salisbury College and on completion he took up a position as a Carpenter with local firm Rush & Tompkins who were based on Southampton Road.
In 1996, Brian changed career paths and began working for the Ministry of Defence, firstly at Old Sarum. He then moved to HQ Land Command, in Wilton. Since February last year, he has worked at Winterbourne Gunner.
Being a local man, links to Brian’s family can be found across the city including the War Memorial in the Guildhall Square which bears the name of William James Burton who was killed in the 3rd battle of Ypres on 9 September 1917 and was Brian’s Great Uncle. Brian’s grandparents Albert and Ada Burton served generations of local children in their shop in Culver Street too.
Brian is not only a City Councillor but also sits on Wiltshire Council as the unitary Councillor for Harnham. Brian was first elected as a councillor for Harnham in 1995.
As a local councillor, Brian strives to be the voice for the Harnham residents and the community. As a resident of the area himself and with young daughters, Brian understands more than ever the need for family facilities and ensures that the safety and welfare of residents is the upmost importance.
