Sister Cities
Salisbury and the City Council have generated close links with other cities through out the world.
We have twinned with Saintes in South West France and Xanten in Germany as well as having sister cities in North Carolina and Maryland USA.
You are guaranteed a very warm welcome if you mention you are visiting from Salisbury, England!
Saintes
Salisbury has been formally twinned with Saintes in south-west France since 1990.
Twinning, or partnership, in both Salisbury and Saintes is viewed as a means of fostering cultural, sporting, educational and commercial links between both communities. Whether those links happen to focus on singing or on golf, on rugby or on painting, on cycling or on accountancy, there are always opportunities for developing shared interests and improving language skills. Links have also been set up between schools in both towns.
Join the Salisbury Saintes Twinning Association to be put in touch with twinners in the Charente-Maritime who will be delighted to show you round and extend the hand of friendship. We also hold social events in Salisbury at which members can find out more about Saintes and about twinning activities.
Xanten
Salisbury has been twinned with Xanten since 2005 when a formal Twinning Agreement was signed by the Mayors of both cities at the Guildhall.
This Twinning Association exists to foster social, cultural, commercial, sporting, educational and civic relations between our two cities.
Regular coach trips take place to Xanten in the October half term of odd years. The Germans come here in June in even years. The Mayor of Xanten is always invited to Mayor Making and the Mayor of Salisbury usually pays a reciprocal visit.
Our Sister Cities
Salisbury, North Carolina & Salisbury, Maryland USA
Salisbury, Maryland, USA became a sister city in1932 when Mayor Rambridge visited the USA. He was presented with a Silver Casket containing the key to the City of Salisbury of Maryland.
Salisbury, North Carolina, USA celebrated becoming a sister city in 1981 when the City was presented with a Bronze Bust.
The Sister City relationships between Salisbury and Salisbury North Carolina and Salisbury Maryland USA were celebrated with a formal event in 2001 when Salisbury’s Mayor Councillor S Fear visited USA with a civic delegation.
