New plaques have been installed at Salisbury War Memorial to remember those who died in World War 2

Three new plaques have been installed at Salisbury War Memorial to remember those who died whilst serving in World War 2.

The cast bronze plaques, which are on the south side of the War Memorial facing Salisbury Guildhall, list the names of 224 local people who died whilst fighting for their country. These join the existing 6 plaques which recognise the 460 local citizens who lost their lives in World War 1.

Turf will be laid at both sides of the War Memorial this year ahead of the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal launch on Saturday 28 October and the Armistice and Remembrance Sunday ceremonies.

A special dedication of the plaques will be included in this year’s Armistice Day service on Saturday 11 November.

Project Manager, Chris Hewitt said, “Finally the men of Salisbury who died in World War 2 have the Memorial they deserve next to those who died in World War 1.”

The plaques cost £19,300 with funds raised by private donations. Installation of the plaques were carried out by contractor, Fitzpatrick Woolmer of Rochester.
